In this series, we check back in with the different schools on their projects to hear about their year long journey and the innovative ways they’re using sports to make positive social change and leave lasting community impact. Starting with the British School of Quito, Ecuador.
'Play For a Dream'
The British School of Quito’s ‘Play for a Dream’ project shows how sport can inspire change. Students at BSQ organised a community-focused football tournament while leveraging the event to raise donations and sporting equipment to public schools from less fortunate areas. As part of their comprehensive school project, and in the lead up to the tournament, the students organised workshops centred around initiatives like the Play for a Dream project and Goles con Valores (Goals with Values).
The football tournament was an opportunity to foster camaraderie, teamwork and healthy competition among students, parents, and teachers from various schools. Through the universal language of football, BSQ students have been able to make a meaningful difference to those in less fortunate situations.
Building on the excitement surrounding the recent FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, the students integrated its theme into their activities. A resounding success, the football tournament not only showcased the passion for the sport but also emphasized sustainability, inclusion and gender equality. In line with their commitment to environmental responsibility, the students replaced disposable plastic with reusable glasses during the tournament, significantly reducing waste.
As part of their learning journey, students selected the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that resonated with them the most, with this, BSQ students put a strong emphasis on female players, promoting SDG 5 (Gender Equality), as well as SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
Workshops held during the tournament focused on the power of sports in community development. These sessions opened dialogues on how sports can be leveraged to support and uplift communities, particularly by inspiring the next generation to take action.
And finally, with generous donations from other schools, the BSQ students were able to support a local public school in need of sporting equipment.
Congratulations to the BSQ team on an amazing project!
